First of all…FINALLY…FREE TIME!!! I have done all my school’s works which include: exam, grading exam, giving remedial and retest, calculating the grade, writing report cards and lastly Graduation Ceremony. We will have end of school year’s holiday next week. The holiday will last till July 8th.
I have made some plans which includes watching movies and TVseries as much as I can…and a trip.
Lately, I enjoy watching movies under the same theme…it makes a fun review post. I might not be able to do this for a long time but I am already planning for another same theme next week.
I didn’t really plan this till I saw Godzilla last weekend. When I got home I realized that I had Jack The Giant Slayer on my to-watch list (because I want to see another movie by the handsome Nicholas Hoult…he charmed me on Warm Bodies).
I saw other movies too but I decided to put the review in next week’s review because I am planning to watch more movies with the same theme.
I will stop the introduction now and go straight to the review (more to how I feel about the movies rather than real review)
Godzilla (2014)

I used to watch Godzilla when I was a kid. The last Godzilla movie by Hollywood was a total disappointment because they changed a lot of it. That Godzilla was not THE Godzilla we all know from Japanese movies. That Godzilla was not scary at all. when I heard about the new Godzilla…I thought maybe it’ll be better now.
I am glad I was right 🙂
The 2014 Godzilla was WAAAAYYY better than the 1998 Godzilla. This Godzilla feels more like the Japanese version of Godzilla.
There are many kinds of Godzilla version, I like the version where Godzilla helped save the world more than when Godzilla was portrayed as the monster who destroyed the world. This Godzilla, fortunately, followed the first version (not the later).
I really enjoy the movie. The actors are showing good acting ability, the story is simple and Godzilla and MUTO kick ass. The visual effect is better than the Japanese ones and it is always fun to see skyscrapers mean nothing to these giants…plus I love seeing how powerless US Army is in this movie, I am so damn tired of seeing movies where only US Army can save humanity from aliens and monsters.
However, the movie has so much plot holes…all I can say is that when you decide to see Godzilla, make sure you prepare to ignore all the things related to real life, just enjoy the movie…and…I have to admit that Aaron Taylor-Johnson is looking VERY handsome here. I honestly never thought he could grow to be THAT handsome.

Jack The Giant Slayer (2013)

Jack The Giant Slayer is from the famous fairy tale Jack and The Bean Stalk. Just by looking at the trailer I know for sure it won’t be a movie for me…not because it’s bad, it’s more to the fact that fairy tale is not interesting anymore for me. I think it’s a good movie to watch as a family movie. The kids would love the giants.
There’s really nothing much to say about this movie as we all know how the fairy tale goes. There are some difference (of course) but still you know how a typical fairy tales go…the live happily ever after 😉
Although I thing Hoult was a nice treat to see in warm Bodies but here he doesn’t look as cute as he is in Warm Bodies. Apart from him, there’s Ewan McGregor…I always enjoy seeing him in any kind of movies.
Although I only give this movie low rating but I think it’s a good TV movie that kids can enjoy…I am pretty sure my country’s localTV station will soon play this movie during school holidays.

Hope you’re enjoying your free time! So many plot holes but Godzilla’s look is very cool. I’ve only seen Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a high school student in Kick Ass so it took a bit of time to accept he’s grown up and married with kids in this movie. 🙂

Agree…Godzilla reminds me of Pacific Rim, so many plot holes but very enjoyable.

Haha. I totally agree with you with the Godzilla thing. Additionally, I think if we ignore the English that was spoken, it feels like a Japanese film to the core. (The silent climax, the slow reveal, Ken Watanabe (lol). I feel like watching the Japanese release of this film soon, where I suspect it will be dubbed in Japanese.
Less silence wil be more like the Japanese…but yeah this one has Japanese vibes more than the old one.
Hehehe as much as I like things Japanese, I don’t think I want to watch this is Japanese…because I don’t like dubbing.

I see that you enjoyed it much more than me. I liked the way they portrayed Godzilla himself, but I was so disappointed that they spent so little time showing him off. He deserved lots more screen time fighting the MUTO’s and the army people. It was so much better than the 1998 version though…. 😉

He did show up a bit less than I expected but overall I like it because it has that Japanese mentor movie vibes…beside, too much fighting scene will be a bit boring, we need a story as well as action.
Hahaha!! No, no… no long Honeymoon break for lil’ ol’ me. Not yet, anyway. I’ve just been super busy at work of late… and yes, spending evenings out more often with Carolyn. Kind of a trade off… spending more “me” time as “us” time. 🙂
I used to really like the old original Godzilla movies, and the sequels. My favorite TV show for a while was Ultraman, a Japanese monster show similar to Godzilla.
I also love Ultraman! I still watch it when it’s on TV. They continue the show with so many version of ultraman.
maybe one day Hollywood also try to remake this 😉
I didn’t know they made new versions of Ultraman. I should see if any are on Youtube.

There are lots of episodes of the newer series. I had no idea there were a hundred new versions of Ultraman!
Japanese is like that…they have so many ultraman, kamen rider and many other tokusatsu
I’ll have to add Godzilla to my watch list along with Warm Bodies, though I really liked the version you don’t and I’m not happy about plot holes. Jack the Giant Slayer looks fun to me as they clearly didn’t stick to the original story too closely.
I think the reason I am not that fond with the previous version is because of how different it is with most Godzilla movies. I enjoy it more if I got rid the image of the real Godzilla. The previous Godzilla had as much plot holes as the new one, IMO 😉

The trailer looks fantastic. I love the part where the fighter planes are all dropping from the clouds.
Great review. I liked the film and thought the majority of the film was good, which is a nice change from the 98 version which was mostly bad.
The visuals and tone worked really well but the characters where lifeless, except Cranston.
Still bring on MechaGodzilla! 😀

Hi Nov! I gave the same rating to Jack The Giant Slayer, what a complete waste of time. I expected more from Bryan Singer. I’d give the same rating to Godzilla too. It’s not bad but I wish it were more humorous. But yeah we agree Aaron Taylor-Johnson is gorgeous! He’s my only British crush who’s under 25! But he seems to like older women 😉
It wasn’t a waste of time for me because I can still enjoy the cute face of Nicholas Hoult 😉
I expected it to be serious, the previous Godzilla was already humorous (in many ways). Huahahahaha don’t you just wish 😉 Maybe when I am 41 I will meet my 18 years old future husband ;p

I like it because it has more Japanese vibe….plus it’s great to see the way he destroys the buildings in better special effect than the ones in old Japanese Godzilla movies.

I still have very high hopes for Godzilla. I wasn’t too keen on Pacific Rim though, so I’m not sure if I’ll like it. The second movie doesn’t sound like one I need to watch.
Pacific Rim is awesome if your intention is not to watch a great story…just enjoy the visual. Same with Godzilla
