Movies Lately: Taken 2, The Avengers, BIG, Europa Report, Harakiri, Catch Me If You Can, Nowhere Boy

I watched some movies lately (I still watch TVseries more) but I don’t have the will to wrote the review even though the movies were great. I think one of the reasons why I am too lazy to write a movie review is because I have so many things I want to write but so little time to do it.

Long story short, here are the movies I watched lately 🙂

2 stars movies:

Taken 2

Taken_2_PosterPlot from imdb:

In Istanbul, retired CIA operative Bryan Mills and his wife are taken hostage by the father of a kidnapper Mills killed while rescuing his daughter.

I watched Taken on the plane when I went back to Padang. I can pretty much predict the story without having to read any review on the movies but despite of that fact I still chose to watch that movie because the handsome old man by the name of Liam Neeson is once again kicking people’s butts.

The movie is very simple and so predictable. I used to love movies like this where story is not the big concern only the action is the attraction…since I am no longer that kind of movie viewer, the movie doesn’t gave me a lot of impression.

The Avengers

220px-TheAvengers2012PosterPlot from imdb:

Nick Fury is director of S.H.I.E.L.D, an international peace keeping agency. The agency is a who’s who of Marvel Super Heroes, with Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When global security is threatened by Loki and his cohorts, Nick Fury and his team will need all their powers to save the world from disaster.

I watched the Avengers on New Year, it was one of those movies the local TV Channel shared for people to spent new year’s eve.

The first 30 minutes was okay, I quite like it but then the story becomes too boring for me. To be honest I don’t even remember the whole story anymore. All I remember is Robert Downey is still looking great. I know I am no longer fans of those superheroes in tight suits. I only watched them when they are on TV. The only thing that will make me walk to the cinema is when Cillian is in the movie (like The Dark Knight Rises 😉 )

It’s just not a movie for me even though a lot of people like it.

BIG

Big_PosterPlot from imdb:

A young boy makes a wish at a fairground machine to be big. He wakes up the following morning to find that his wish has been granted and his body has grown older over night. But he is still the same 12 year old kid on the inside. Now he must learn how to cope with the unfamiliar world of grown ups including getting a job, and having his first romantic encounter with a woman. What will he find out about this strange world?

I rewatched BIG few days ago. I have watched years ago and out of the blue I wanted to watch it again and I still find it interesting.

What I like about BIG is how real the story is, when we were kids everything are so fun but once we have entered the working world, we tend to forget to have fun.

Europa Report

Europa_Report_Official_PosterPlot from imdb:

The astronauts William Xu, Rosa Dasque, Dr. Daniel Luxembourg, Dr. Katya Petrovna, Andrei Blok and James Corrigan travel to the moon of Jupiter known as Europa in the spacecraft Europa One. Their assignment is to investigate the existence of life in Europa, based on the discovery of water in the moon. When they experience communication breakdown, Andrei and Corrigan need to go outside the spacecraft to repair it. However, Corrigan accidentally contaminates his suit with hydrazine and he is left behind in space. When they land, they miss their target and they decide to drill the ice to research. Then Katya collects samples proving the existence of one alien organism from Europa but she has a tragic accident. The survivors decide to return to Earth with their discovery but there is a problem with the engines and they get stranded in Europa. Will they be able to fix the engines and return to Earth with their findings?

I watched Europa Report because Sharlto Copley is in it and also because many people said it’s a good movie. I concurred what they have said, Europa Report is really good but I still consider it as 3 star movie because even though it’s great but it’s not something new. I love the way the movie creates its suspense although I was hoping that what kills them remains mystery till the end.

Here’s a more detail review by Ruth @ Flixchatter> Here

Harakiri:  Death of Samurai

Hara-KiriPlot from imdb:

An tale of revenge, honor and disgrace, centering on a poverty-stricken samurai who discovers the fate of his ronin son-in-law, setting in motion a tense showdown of vengeance against the house of a feudal lord.

At first, I was planning to do a double review with Miyuki @  Nekoneko’s Movie Litterbox but like I said above, I don’t the will to write full movie review lately…so sorry Miyuki, we should do this again when I finally have the mood to do a full review again 🙂

Harakiri – Death of a Samurai started very strong and to watch that first part of the movie one has to have strong stomach because it was incredibly painful to see the way the harakiri was done. I have seen a lot of harakiri in samurai movies but that one was the worst of all.

The cinematography was great but there’s something about the plot that made me unable to like it as much as I like 13 Assassins.

Catch Me If You Can

Catch_Me_If_You_Can_2002_moviePlot from imdb:

A true story about Frank Abagnale Jr., who, before his 19th birthday, successfully conned millions of dollars’ worth of checks as a Pan Am pilot, doctor, and legal prosecutor.

Another rewatch. Just like BIG, I watched it many years ago. Although I still remember the story but I still see it as a fresh movie when I rewatched it.

I am a sucker for based on true story kind of movies…it’s not always good but the good outnumbered the bad ones  and that’s why I keep watching based on true story movies. Catch me is really fun and has good message.

I really want to read the book but I still haven’t found it yet.

Nowhere Boy

Nowhere BoyPlot from imdb:

A chronicle of John Lennon’s first years, focused mainly in his adolescence and his relationship with his stern aunt Mimi, who raised him, and his absentee mother Julia, who re-entered his life at a crucial moment in his young life.

Out of all that I have seen in January and February…Nowhere Boy is the best. I know the story is about John Lennon long before I watched it but I thought it would be more to his music career rather than his family. It’s interesting to see how he was trapped between two influential women that have  such a different personality. I think it’s a really good family movie, complex and still adorable.

My fav quote from the movie: “There’s just no point hating someone you love.”

I really like the acting of all the cast. Aaron Taylor-Johnson look so much like John Lennon, tho he doesn’t look like Lennon at all when I saw him in Kick-Ass! I do believe that’s the power of good acting! Everyone is amazing here, especially Johnson, Kristin Scott Thomas (Mimi) and Anne-Marie Duff (Julia). Too bad the one who played Paul McCartney wasn’t that good.

Have you watched any of those movies? Do share how you feel about the movies…I am quite sure we have different opinion, especially on The Avengers 😉

  1. I just watched Taken 2 last night! Agreed with your rating, too. I recommend the original Harakiri, instead, directed by Masaki Kobayashi, with the wonderful Tatsuya Nakadai. I’ve seen the remake. As you said, it starts off strong and tails off. The 1962 film is the opposite. Love Catch Me If You Can, and need to see Nowhere Boy. Thanks.

    1. I think that’s going to be a bit hard to find 😦 But I will try. I didn’t know harakiri was a remake till I saw it in imdb when I was writing this post.

I think you will like Nowhere Boy 🙂

      Thank you Mike.

    1. No two out of seven are great, three out of seven are good and the last two are the kind I will only see if there’s nothing else on TV…which are the one I gave 2 stars. But bear in mind that my rating is always based on whether I like it or not never a suggestion for other people because I am not a movie critic 😉

      1. LOL. No. I meant; is two great movies out of seven really worth it?

Ah, which reminds me about Tracy. She used the correct word, but has the wrong attitude. She means Drew and Ben should show a bit more restraint.

  2. LOVE Nowhere Boy, I fell for Aaron Johnson in that movie 😉 I like Europa Report and I too saw it because of Copley but I didn’t care for the ending.

        1. Ah yes!! I also didn’t like that part, that’s why it’s only a 3 star movie.

Ah!! I missed your review. Just finished reading it, I am going to link it to mine because you have a much better review than me 😉

          1. You’ve seem to be very busy these days so I think there’s been lots of other reviews you’ve missed 😉 It’s ok, I understand.

Yeah, I like everything about the movie up until that point. I saw it because of Sharlto but I like the entire cast here who are very believable in their roles. I just wished the ending had been more um, intelligent. Just having a monster in it seems lazy to me.

Hey thanks in advanced for linking Nov!

          2. I am 😦
Even now, i am blogging in between making my midterm exam for science.

I think it’ll be much better if the squid-like alien didn’t appear, makes it more mysterious.

            No prob 🙂

  3. Funny, I just watched Taken 1 and 2 one week ago. The first one is better but I still thought it was entertaining. Not great but OK.
I’d like to see Nowhere Boy.

    1. Yup…that’s why I said 2 stars, it was an okay movie.
I haven’t, yet, read a bad review on Nowhere Boy…I think you would like it too
