Willy Wonka’s famous chocolate factory is opening at last!
But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. First of all, I have to confess that I HAVE NEVER READ ROALD DAHL BEFORE. I know this might sound silly, I am like one of those people who haven’t read harry potter yet 😉 When I was a kid, I read some Enid Blyton but first love toward books was actually The Three Detectives. I have never heard of Roald Dahl till I was sort of a grown up, by then children books have lost its charm on me.
However, my new school’s library has just given me a second chance to get into the world of Roald Dahl.
I LOVE MY SCHOOL’s Library!! So tidy and so many books. This is the first time I teach in a school with proper library. Three weeks ago, we were about to start our holiday and I decided to borrow a book from the library…and my eyes fell on Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. I remembered the movie well because I like the cast but I have never read the book (plus I have never read any by Dahl), so I borrowed the book…just for fun!
…and I loved it!! It might be a children book but it’s still fun for older people.
It wasn’t like how imagine it to be…my reference was the movie. I like Willi Wonka from the book more than Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka. Mr. Wonka in the book is more cheerful and talkative, he might be weird but he is also fun…not weird weird like Depp’s wonka.
I can’t help feeling that this book has influenced JK Rowling’s funny food in Harry Potter. There are so many unthinkable sweet. Me. Dahl sure has brilliant imagination. The rooms where he develops his new sweet are marvelous. The book makes me want to walk along with those five kids.
I don’t think I need to write what the story is about because I bet everyone knows the story 😉 (I put the blurb on top in case there is still someone who doesn’t what Charlie and The Chocolate Factory is all about)
It was fun reading Roald Dahl’s world and I am now reading another of his book 🙂

I’ve got that Penguin edition of the book. I haven’t read it in a looong time but I remember enjoying it not like the awful film. I think I got it from my school’s book club.
The film wasn’t that awful, I like the visual. Depp definitely played different Willy Wonka and I like the character in the book more
I wasn’t too fond of the film. I found it dull but then my taste runs into more serious and darker things.
I am not going to call it as good adaptation movie and you’re right about it being dull (well, a bit dull for me)… but because I saw it before reading it, when I watched it I thought the visual is interesting.
Harry Potter is much, much better. Yes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a good story. I enjoyed the book when I was a kid, and a couple of the movies have been all right. Yes, Depp’s weirdness isn’t quite right for Charlie. But Potter is on a different level. Don’t put it off.

Hey, I like LOTR too. I’m eagerly looking forward to the next segment of The Hobbit to hit theaters next Christmas.
Me too! They made the story longer than the book but I still like it.
It made me want to reread the book.
Anything with chocolate in it has to be a sweet and delicious idea and this movie and book are both gorgeously thought out 🙂 I think that the film wins though 😉 Have a really nice rest of weekend Miss. Novia 😉

I like the book more because Depp has different interpretation of the cheerful Willy Wonka. I like cheerful Willy more than weird Willy.

I’m glad to hear you have access to that wonderful Library! That particular story is one that I haven’t read either, although I’ve seen both movie versions.
Of the two… I prefer the older one with Gene Wilder… he was an odd and eccentric character but he didn’t creep me out quite the way Johnny Depp’s interpretation did. People have told me that he was trying to be a bit unsettling, but for me at least, his version was just too strange and made me feel very uncomfortable at times.
I haven’t seen the old movie yet. As for the new one, I also think Depp is a bit creepy for a chocolate maker. However, I really like little Freddie (Charlie Bucket)…he is so adorable.

I have this book somewhere but I always thought it would be too much like the movie so I never read it. It sounds different and very enjoyable though.
I’ve read Kiss, Kiss by Roald Dahl, macabre short stories. Quite good.
I like the book more than the movie. It’s clearly a children book but it’s still enjoyable for grown-ups.
I am now reading his autobiography…another fun book.
I will look for Kiss, Kiss in the library tomorrow 🙂
Ahh! I read lots of Roald Dahl when I was younger 😀 Since you liked it, see if you can pick up the ‘sequel’ – Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, if I remember correctly. Also see if you can watch the older film version with Gene Wilder. I did like the Depp version too though.
I also liked Matilda and The BFG of Dahl’s childrens’ books, in case you would like further recommendations 🙂
I think the library has many Dahl. I will check it out on Monday. But I am not going to read another Dahl in a short period, save it for later 😉

Never read the book. I liked the new Wonka film, but I liked the older one with Gene Wilder (1970’s) better.
I think I really need to find that Wilder movie.
