As I have said before in my top-5 books of 2012, the year is almost over and it’s the right time to share my favorite of 2012. I have done top-5 books few days ago…time for the movies now 🙂

I didn’t watch a lot of movie released in 2012 because I wasn’t that interested…therefore, this list consists of movies I WATCHED in 2012 without caring for its released year. There are only 2 movies released in 2012, the rest are of years far behind 2012.

First of all, here are all the movies I have seen in 2012 (excluding re-watched):

Movies I have seen and reviewed:

  1. Lock, Stock and Two smoking Barrels
  2. Burke and Hare
  3. Carrie
  4. The Woman in Black
  5. Stuart: A Life Backwards
  6. How To Train Your Dragon
  7. I Bought a Zoo
  8. The Prestige
  9. Thor
  10. The Dark Knight Rises
  11. Being John Malkovich
  12. Fish Story
  13. Red Lights
  14. The Machinist
  15. Insidious
  16. The Grey
  17. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
  18. War Horse
  19. Starter for 10
  20. Billy Elliot
  21. Submarine
  22. The Decoy Bride
  23. Once, Little Shop of Horror, & Beloved.
  24. The Hobbit
Movies I didn’t review:

  1. The Art of Getting By
  2. Good
  3. Haywire
  4. Firewall
  5. Son of Rambow

World Cinema Series which I hope will be held again next year:

  1. Låt den rätte komma in – Let The Right One In (Sweden)
  2. 十三人の刺客 – 13 Assassins (Japan)
  3. Amazing Grace  (England)
  4. The Wind That Shakes The Barley & Perrier’s Bounty (Ireland)
  5. The Raid : Redemption (Indonesia)
  6. Prometheus (US)
  7. Pintu Terlarang (Indonesia)
  8. Napola – Elite für den Führer (Germany)

I can’t pick 5 movies because I am really pleased with most of the movies I watched throughout 2012…I like them a lot and decided to make a top-10 list with no particular order. The number you see in front of the movie title is merely the order of which I saw first.

Here are my favorites in 2012: (in no particular order)

1. The prestige

Nolan is a genius!! I love the thrill and the conflict between the two characters a lot…and the ending is just perfect! I am sure I will watch it again one day

2. Being John MalkovichBeing John Malkovich

Brilliant and mind blowing movie. I love how surreal and absurd Being John Malkovich is!! There should be more movies like this.

Fish Story

3. Fish Story

A domino effect at its best. I love how the ending explained the connection of all the loose stories into final conclusion. A song that save the world…great concept for a movie!

4. The Machinist

Another movie that keeps me guessing what is really going on in the story. I love this kind of challenging movie plus Bale is freakin amazing.

5. Billy Eliot

A family movie with big heart in it. I love everything about Billy Elliot, the acting, the dance, the story and even the accent. The story is quite predictable but they wrapped it in a very nice way.

6. Amazing Grace

I rarely like historical movie, but Amazing Grace is something beautiful. I love the issue they were fighting for. Slavery is a very tough issue. Plus, Benedict shows great acting.

7. 13 Assassins

I really like this movie, not only because I like Samurai movies but also because Jūsannin no Shikaku has a good moral story. It also has great fighting scene.

The Raid

8. The Raid

Indonesia should make more movies like this!! Yes, the director is not Indonesian so it’s not 100% pure Indonesia…but I love how it explores Indonesian Martial Art and shares it with the world. The story might not be a great one but the action is clearly the best I have seen in years.

9. Prometheus

I have read so many bad reviews on this movie…but despite all those reviews, I love it so much. I love the story with all its flaws, can’t wait to see the sequel.

The Hobbit

10. The Hobbit

Peter Jackson did it again!! The Hobbit is clearly the best movie I have seen which was released in 2012. I haven’t had time to review it but will do it soon.

Apart from 2 hour (more or less) movies, in 2012 I have been glued to TVseries or TV shows. I think I spent more time watching them than movies. Here are the series I have watched in 2012

  1. Sherlock
  2. The IT Crowd
  3. Birdsong
  4. My Boss My Heroes
  5. Mukodono
  6. Zenkai Garu
  7. Seirei no Moribito
  8. 野ブタ。をプロデュース (Producing Nobuta)
  9. Doctor Who (2005)
  10. Black Books
  11. Doctor Who (2006)
  12. Doctor Who (2007)
  13. Doctor Who (2008)
  14. Never Mind The Buzzcocks
  15. The Mighty Boosh – Series 1

I didn’t realize till I saw my list that I have only seen series from Japan and England throughout 2012…and I know it will continue to 2013 as ALL the series I have in stored are from England and Japan (The Mighty Boosh series 2 and 3, Being Human, Doctor Who series 5 and 6, Hunderby, Unubore Deka, Spaced, Nathan Barley, The Office, etc. I am also going to pick more Japanese Dorama somewhere along the year. Maybe…not sure yet…I will watch one or two TVseries from US…once again, Maybe.

Out of all TVseries/show I have seen in 2012, here are 5 series that will be my all time favorite (I will have to update my top-5 TVseries next year!!) – Again based on time of viewing

1. Sherlock

Do I need to say something about this amazing series? Not only it’s freakin genius, it’s also funny. Benedict and Martin are amazing together and Benedict’s Sherlock is the best Sherlock I have ever seen.

2. The IT Crowd

Freakin hilarious!! I haven’t had such good laugh over sitcom till I saw the IT Crowd. The chemistry between the three main characters is just great and the jokes are simply but very effective.

3. 野ブタ。をプロデュース (Producing Nobuta)

I always love friendship stories. Nobuta wo Produce (Producing Nobuta) is one of the best friendship theme Dorama (Japanese drama series) I have ever seen. The three main characters are so different but their differences is the one that glued them together.

4. Doctor Who

A bit late finding this amazing series but at least I finally found it. I love the character and the story. One of the most enjoyable sci-fi series I have ever seen. Looking forward to see more of Doctor Who next year.

5. The Mighty Boosh

BEST COMEDY EVER!! So surreal and yet so fun. There’s nothing I dislike about this series. Finding this series makes me wonder where have I been all this time? I love it so much that I don’t care if I have to spend a lot of money to buy the original DVD. The Mighty Boosh is not like any other sitcom out there, it will not make you laugh all the time but it draws you in like an addict toward his drugs.

2012 has been an amazing viewing year for me…it’s much better than 2011. I am glad I have found all those amazing movies and TV Series.

Now, it’s your turn…do share your favorite Movies or TV Series in the comment 🙂

  1. So glad to see ‘The Prestige’ topping your list, Novroz. It’s now my close second of all of Nolan’s films (Memento being first). Such an extraordinary filmmaker. Happy New Year.

    1. Well, not exactly topping Mike…it’s on number one because I watched it first 😉
I agree with you tho…The Prestige is one of Nolan’s best. I am hoping for more this kind of movie from him and enough with the superhero thingy already.

      Happy New Year, Mike 🙂

  2. Those are great lists! I like the diversity and the fact that we share similar taste 😉 It’s great to see 13 Assassins and Prometheus up there. I loved them. That written… my favourite film is a joint first between The Wolf Children and Shame!

    1. Thank you Jason 🙂
I am glad you like Prometheus because I often found posts which hate the movie 😦

The Wolf Children is in my to-watch list, just waiting for the DVD to show up.

  3. Great recap Nov!! Not surprised at all to see your #1 fave show 😀 Glad to see you enjoy The Hobbit too! It was such a treat for me to see Richard getting such a prominent role in a big movie. I’ve broken up w/ Gerry now (you’ll see why next week) so that leaves Richard and Henry (Cavill) as my two movie boyfriends now 😉

    1. ah…actually Ruth, there’s no number 1 on these list, I just put them in order of time of viewing 😉
I am slighty confuse of which one I like more, Sherlock or The Boosh…each has their best things to love.

Huahaha poor Gerry. I wish I will never break up with Cillian and Noel 😉

  4. Cool list !

I watched so so so so many movies. So…

    Here’s my own list

    – Argo (2012)
Ben Affleck debut as a director. I dunno why it isn’t played in here

    – The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
As usual nolan did a great job. Tom Hardy’s so sick !! And great scoring by Hans Zimmer.

    – battleship potemkin (1925)
Sergei Eisenstein’s masterpiece ! Intelectual montage.

    – my blueberry night (2007)
Great concept by wong kar wai. The Voyeur shots in this movie is sooo memorable and powerful

And the best movie which I watched is……

    LIFE OF PI !!!!

Ang Lee made a great job.. Great visual, great story, and the 3D is so sick !! Much much much much better than Avatar. Haha

Actually I’m waiting 2 movies which come out in this year but it’s not played in here yet.
    – Les Miserables (will be played at 16 jan)

    – Lincoln (my friend said it’s officially not played in here. Let’s hope the distributors change their mind)

    1. Thanks 🙂
Whoaa…I have only seen one movie from your list, TDKR.
It’s nice seeing how diversity your movie is.

Talking about movies unable to make it here is really sad … I have so many I want to see in big screen but our cinema seems to brush it off 😦

Thank you for sharing your list Reva 🙂 I’ll take note to see the movies in your list that I haven’t seen

  5. Hi Novia, I’m interested to see Amazing Grace as I’ve heard it is quite inspirational. I thought Prometheus was a terrible film, partly because of the ridiculous idea behind the plot (humans were seeded by aliens from outer space!?!) and partly because it was a big let down from Scott in his return to the franchise. Another let down for me (I’m sorry to say) was The Hobbit. I so wanted to love this film the way I did LOTR but i guess my expectations were just too high. I’ll have to lower my sights a bit for The Desolation of Smaug. What is wrong with making one movie? Jackson managed to cram enough into King Kong, surely he could have done the same for The Hobbit. I think it is over indulgent at best.

    1. Hi Ronan…long time no see 🙂
Thanks for stopping by…hope everything is well with you and Irina.
Ah…Prometheus does get that reaction…but for me, I can take stories where human is created by alien (despite the fact that I am religious) rather than stories of Army of Angels fighting God or denying God’s order. Human is from alien is more like a pure fantasy for me but the later is like a joke on religion…that’s why I can handle Prometheus really well.

I think The Hobbit could do as a 2 movies…as a trilogy is a bit too much, but as a one will be too dense in my opinion. Two is the ideal number for me.

  6. Waaaa~…taon 2012….ga bayak pilm yg gw tonton terakhir ntn Resident evil *sigh* cm doyan n ngulang pilm Hanibal the series… ^.^
Klo tv seriesnya….sherlock….the best dah ah…..
eh…iya da satu lagi pilm series yg gw tonton slama taon 2012 keekekekeke….Takumikun….tiap bulan pasti ngulang ntnnya….
Ga banyak pilm n drama yg gw tonton di taon 2012…btw apakah dirimu membahas konser d taon 2012???ahahaha

    1. gw malah blm nntn resident evil 😉

hehe Sherlock emang mencuri byk hati org. Takumikun ttg apa?
Gw yg plg sering diulang skr ya Mighty Boosh dgn bromancenya itu 😉

krn gw cuma nntn 3konser jg ga mgkn bkin top 5…tp gw bahas di post akhir/awal tahun sbg the best moment 2012.

      Sankyu dah brbagi Rur 🙂

  7. The only TV shows that I watched religiously was “The Walking Dead” and “Falling Skies,” unless you count the three episodes of “Sherlock.”

I’m glad you have “Prometheus” as one of the best films of the year. It’s very polarizing and it’s definitely not perfect, but it left me thinking about it for weeks. For a movie to have that much impact on me says a lot.

    1. I consider Sherlock as a series because almost all British series are short.
Ah…I have been meaning to watch The Walking Dead..maybe in 2013 it can be my US series (I didn’t watch any US series in 2012, I should at least try in 2013).

Prometheus is definitely NOT perfect but there’s something about it that I like so much…it felt fresh. Nice to meet others who also like it 🙂

  8. You’ve been giving me great entertainment ideas, not just movies but everything, and introducing me to actors and actresses all year long. I’ve already got Sherlock and Mighty Boosh on my be-sure-to-watch list, thanks to you.

    1. You are MORE than welcome Audrey 🙂
To know that someone actually taking my writing into consideration is really something special. I write about all those entertainments and actors simply because I love them, and when I know it can be a good reference to others…I feel my heart sings 🙂

  9. I’ve heard good things about IT Crowd. And glad you passed the year eventhough it looked rough at start. You seem happy every time I saw you 🙂
My fave movie 2012 at the moment is Intouchables, I loved it. And for TV series, I’m going to vote on 30 Rock. I started seeing the show this year, and it is freakin’ hilarious!

    1. Oh…The IT Crowd is soo funny!! you should really check it out. It’s a more conventional sitcom than the Mighty Boosh, i like to recommend it to people more than the Boosh because i know NOT everyone can accept the kind of joke the Boosh has but everyone can easily understand the joke in IT Crowd.

It was really tough but I am not the kind of person who likes to show everyone that i am feeling sad inside…I am more of a happy go round person 😉

      I haven’t seen 30 Rock yet…will put it on my to-check-out list. Thanks 🙂

  10. Great blog you got here, man.

“13 Assassins” is sooo good. I loved it. I watched a LOT of movies in ’12, due to not having a life, and I ranked them on my blog. I still have a bunch of flicks to watch. Some of the tv shows you mentioned, I do not know, but “Doctor Who” and “Sherlock Holmes”? Brilliant.

    Keep up the good work.

    1. Thank you Fat Man 🙂

hear hear!! I think I will watch 13 assassins again one day because I really like it. Hahaha I don’t watch many 2012 movies not because I have a life but more because I like to explore movies from different times….plus not many 2012 movies intrigued me.

I know…when it comes to TVseries, not many know about the one I love the most out of those 5 series I’ve mentioned, The Mighty Boosh is amazing in my opinion but I am a loner fan.

      1. Oh, I watch all sorts of movies. But somewhere along the line I had the idea for my blog with the ranking thing, lol. A LOT of the movies I watched didn’t intrigue me at all. Some just watching were downright painful. lol.

        1. You watched movies that don’t intrigue you? I have to give you an applause!!
I rarely watch movies that don’t intrigue me, especially when the cast consist of actors I don’t like…I know, I am too picky, but I have little time and so many to watch, better choose the ones I know I will like.

          1. Usually I watch everything. My limits are: Adam Sandler comedies and live action adaptations of cartoons. Other than that I’ll watch anything. Even Katherine Heigl’s romcoms. lol

          2. I like Sandler’s old movies…his recent ones are not interesting anymore…plus I have gone to the other side now, British comedies are my thing now.
            A good rom-com, I still can watch it 😉

          3. I like Sandler’s dramas like “Punch-drunk love” and “Spanglish” (which is more of a dramedy). And, definitely, brit comedies are the bomb. I love them. I can watch some romcoms. Like…. “Notting Hill”. (which is a british movie, iirc).

  11. Can’t wait for you Hobbit review. We saw it on New Years and I loved it. I’m still surprised that it’s a trilogy, but okay. I didn’t like the movie Thor either. It had so much potential but I thought the story fell flat and the acting was worse than normal for these types of movies. I was surprised since Portman just won for Black Swan.

    1. I am not sure when I will review it…somehow I got a writer block every time I want to write about The Hobbit…I don’t know why. I thought it’s an all around movie-review-writer-block, but I have just finished reviewing 2 movies for my Monday Movies post.

Yeah…for Thor, maybe my lost of interest toward superhero movies play part in it.

  12. Best Movies i’ve seen in 2012

    – Cabin In The Woods (2012)

It’s been awhile since i’ve been really excited to watch a horror movie and didn’t hit the fast forward button since Pocong 2. Hyped as the game changer for horror genre and best horror movie in last few years, Cabin totally lives up to the hype. Great story + acting + cameo appearances from classic horror characters, this satire movie is recommended to any horror fan

    – The Avengers (2012)

I like how Joss Whedon able to combine all of the superheroes into one entity. I thought this movie was going to be a trainwreck, but i was wrong. Yes, it lacks a good story, but the actors make up for it with their flawless performance. Yes it lacks logic, but cmo’n, it’s a superhero movie. It’s supposed to defy logic.

    – The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

Of course it won’t be better than The Dark Knight. It’s a shame that the last 20 or 30 minutes in thie movie just didn’t cut it out for me. I dislike how they revealed Bane’s real motive and it turned out that he did all those things for a woman who’s way beyond his age. Boooo! Although this movie is the good way to end the Batman saga, you can see Nolan ran out of tricks here.

    – The Usual Suspects (1995)

I never see this movie in it’s entirety so earlier this year i thought i take a shot. And it was AMAZINGGGG. To me it’s one of the best crime thriller movie ever. I really recommend this to anyone out there. The ending in this movie will blow your mind.

    – The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

CMIIW this movie got the highest rating in IMDB. It’s easy to see why.

    1. Thank you for sharing your list Nuzul 🙂
I have been meaning to watch Cabin in The Woods but always forgot to buy it when I saw a DVD seller…will make sure I watch it this year.

I have only seen 2 movies in your list and I completely agree on Shawshank…what a great movie

Say something so I know you have read my post, THANK YOU for reading :)
