I have watched the movie before reading this novella so I have already gotten the idea how the story will flow. I have already written my review of Shawshank Redemption few years back. The movie doesn’t stray away from the book.
The story was told by an inmate with nickname Red. Red is the man who could get anything as long as it is not dangerous. Red didn’t write about his life in Shawshank, he wrote about a man named Andy Dufresne. Andy was charged for killing his wife and her lover. After knowing Andy for years, Red believed that Andy is innocent.
Andy became some sort of myth in Shawshank. He fought the sisters while others seemed to give up. He made deals with prison guard. He turned the small library in Shawshank into a much bigger library. He had his cell for his own. He always acted as if he was not in prison. His coolness changed when he met Tommy Williams. Tommy adored Andy and he wanted to know about Andy’s past. When he finally found out why Andy was sent to Shawshank, he told Andy that he knew who the killer was.
Andy asked the Warden to help him tracked the killer, but the warden was not about to let Andy walked away from the prison. The Warden set everything up so that Andy will stay at Shawshank longer. Andy gave the warden a big shock when he finally done his final act in Shawshank.
Although the writer of this book is Stephen King, don’t expect to see ghost, monster or supernatural ability, the book is pure drama about Hope and Determination. It contains lots of value for life. The writing is very good and it can change our emotions. It is written in an honest way without lots of bullshit. The closing delivered by Andy was unpredictable. Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption is the kind of book that can be reread several time.
We can feel the power of hope and friendship, those powers are stronger than anything. we can get through anything if we always keep our hopes alive.
