Indonesia Banget #30: Year Book

Right this moment, all twelfth graders are having national exam…so I think it’s perfect to talk about year book as they will all soon graduate from high school.

The way I see it, year book is a battle of creativity between classes.

The closer the twelfth graders to their graduation day the more they get busy with their year book, apart from being busy with national exam and university entrance test. We don’t have prom here because it’s not our custom to have a dancing party of sort. However, just like Halloween and Valentine, Prom has slowly gaining more doers. But the proms are mostly hosted by students without school’s involvement. Since they don’t have to think much about prom, they use their creative mind to create the best theme for their year book.

Here in Indonesia (like most Asia) , we don’t use moving class yet. The students are put in one class for the whole year, they got to know each other pretty well for that year. To be honest, I like this arrangement more because it gives chance for students to learn to be a member of community, their class community. This small community will them put their head together to come up with an idea of how to share their class on their year book. Read more of this post

Indonesia Banget #29: The Toilets and The Water

I have been meaning to write about this since last year but I have a lot of second thought because it might sounds a bit dirty or inappropriate to talk about this…but the more I think about the idea the more I feel like it’s an okay idea to share it.

Anyway…If you are feeling uncomfortable with talking about Toilets, please close the page ;)

A year a go, I saw Starter For 10 and there is a scene of a college boy was saying that in Asia, he used his hand instead of tissue to clean up after pooping. Ever since that day, I wanted to share a bit about Indonesian toilets and the manner we have inside it.

The Toilets

Most Indonesian still use squat Toilet instead of flush toilet in their home.

Back then on my school days, I still remember that flush toilet was a rarity, nowadays I see it everywhere, in the mall and houses…however Malls use it the most. Only few Indonesian uses flush toilet in their home. To be honest, I prefer finding squat toilet when I am in the malls unless the malls provide tissue.

Most Indonesian are like me, we don’t trust flush toilet in public that much because the toilet is used by so many people with their thighs touching the toiletwhen using squat toilet, only their feet (which also cover with sandals or shoes) touching the toilet, so it’s much safer and cleaner that way. The Ones I will Miss

I finally quit my job after trying hard to keep my emotion toned down all the time in that office.

I work in two places (used to be 2 places), one is in Pharmacy Vocational School and the other was in this place where I taught Science Experiments to primary kids (it’s a non-formal school, that’s why I call it office). I am not going to say the name here nor the many reasons why I left. There are too many management errors there…here’s a statistic, within almost 3 years I worked there, there were 30 employes who had left the office. Some even left in less than a month after seeing the condition. So, you figure!!

Let’s not talk about it…I just want to share the ones I am going to miss from leaving that place.

I really like all my friends there. They were what keeping me happy…but one by one had left :( I still see them once in a while, we try to keep in touch even though we were no longer working there.

The ones I will miss the most, and it’s a bit impossible to keep in touch with them, are the students!!

Not all of them are the best students in the world. Not all of them are the smartest kids I have ever taught. Not all of them are the type who can sit nicely during the lesson…but each and every one of them are special.

Indonesia Banget #28: Some Public Transportation in Indonesia

Welcome back again to Indonesia Banget where I always share things you can find in/from Indonesia :)

This month, I want to share transportation in, more specifically in Jakarta. I am not going to share the common ones you can find easily in your country, like train, taxi and bus (although our bus is very different to developed countries)…I will only share the ones you can find only in Indonesia (or maybe in other developing countries).

I will share five kinds of transportation this time and maybe one day I can share more transportation.

Becak

I think rickshaw is the right translation for Becak. It’s a tree wheeled vehicle where the driver sit on the back and the passengers on the front. Becak is a short distance taxi with human energy as its fuel ;) Becak’s driver has to be strong because he has to paddle the becak. If the becak’s driver is already our regular, we don’t need to discuss about the fee…but if we come to a new place or to a farther distance, we have to discuss the fee first.

Becak no longer exist in Jakarta because they caused traffic jam, but we can still see becak outside Jakarta.

Good Bye 2012 and Welcome 2013

2012 has been both the saddest and the best year of my life.

My Mom and Kame (may both of you sleep peacefully till resurrection day comes)

Early 2012 was very tough for me. My mom, who was my best friend, had died two weeks before 2012 started and I began year 2012 without her. It was very hard to imagine living without her. To make matter even worst, 3 months after her death, my favorite turtle, Kame, decided to leave me too. I was at my lowest state of mind at that time. Loosing two loved ones in such short time broke me to pieces.

Fortunately, things got better as the year moved on.

I found new lovely turtles…I adopted my little Papoe as a way to get over the grief of losing Kame. And then months later, I feel in love with a cute black turtle and decided to adopt him and named him Kurome. I now have 3 adorable turtles with different personalities. You can see their photos in the end of this post

Year 2012 is the year where I believe in that famous sentence: Dreams Do Come True! The band I have loved for the past 11 years (will be 12 years in 2013) and I was so sure I will never see them Live due to financial issue (I couldn’t afford to go to Japan to see them) finally came to Indonesia! L’Arc~en~Ciel (in short: Laruku) came to Jakarta on May 2, 2012. For me, out of ALL bands ever existed on this planet…Laruku’s concert is the one I want to see the mostthey are the best band in the universe! Read more of this post

A Letter to Mama

Dear Mama,

 How are you?

It’s been a year now since you left us. I hope you have a nice and comfortable sleep. And I hope Kame is keeping you company there. It’ll be thousands of years till we meet again. I hope you’ll still remember me by then.

Dear Mama,
It’s been a hard year for me but I am trying to move on everyday. Did you know that I often felt deep jealousy every time I see a mother and her daughter in a mall? We used to be like that. Walking around together, having a laugh and doing a bit of shopping. I miss those days, I miss you a lot. Thank you for being my best friend.

Dear Mama,
I hope you no longer feel pain. I hope you only feel peace now. I hope every pray I sent to you reached you.

I miss you so much. Read more of this post

Napola (2004) – One Beautiful Friendship Under the Doctrine of Nazism

Despite its awful dubbing and terrible subtitle, I still enjoy Napola up to the point that those two deficiencies are no longer bothering me.

German movies aren’t very common here…well in fact almost most movies from Europe aren’t as common as Hollywood’s here. I have never heard of Napola before and most likely would never hear of it if Caroline @ Beauty Is a sleeping Cat never mentioned in her All About War Movies blog. Her review really intrigued me.

I couldn’t find the original DVD (no surprise there!) and finally relied on torrentz. Unfortunately, the file is so bad that I have to postpone watching it for months after I had finished downloading it. It was dubbed in another European language, but I don’t know which country…the dubbing is not a proper dubbing, it was more like a commentary, his words are above the original voice. I was forced to hear 2 different languages spoken one above the other…and that was incredibly annoying. To make matter worse, the subtitle was equally awful. It won’t show up after ¾th of the movie, I have to open the notepad and read it while watching the movie…watching Napola is probably the worst movie viewing experience I have ever had in my entire life.

However…

The movie itself is incredibly heartwarming and beautiful. I love everything about it. The emotion is transparently shown and has one of the most beautiful friendships in a movie. I like it so much that I overlook that dubbing and subtitle problem. I wish I can see a better version of Napola.

From Wikipedia, I found out what Napola is:

National Political Institutes of Education (German: Nationalpolitische Erziehungsanstalten; officially abbreviated NPEA, commonly abbreviated Napola for Nationalpolitische Lehranstalt meaning National Political Institution of Teaching) were secondary boarding schools in Nazi Germany. They were founded as “community education sites” after the National Socialist seizure of power in 1933.

Napola’s storyline (from Imdb) Read more of this post
